So get this... Apple just found out that they're (most likely) going to have to pay royalties for each and every iPod that they sell... in case you've been living with your head stuffed in a toaster for the last 3 years, the iPod is Apple's best selling item.... ever. For those who don't know, I love making fun of Apple (and Apple users in general ), so this fact alone is enough to send me into fits of glee.... but that's not the best part....
...the kicker is who they have to pay the royalties to.....
It ends up that some dolt at Apple (who has most likely been heartily canned by now) was unsuccessful in patenting key parts of the MP3 software that the iPod is built on.... but guess who did....?
Sorry.... I'm done.
Anywhey.... this issue has been looming over Apple for a couple years now and it finally came to a head this week.... and Apple ended up with the short end of the stick. So now, it's very possible that every time Apple sells one of it's flagship iPods that it will have to give a percentage of the sale to ol' Billy boy..... and every time some wannabe-tech-savvy hipster pays three times too much for an MP3 player just so they can flaunt the latest "fad tech", they will, unwittingly, be supporting that giant Redmond behemoth that we all know and love...... ain't life grand?
Here's an article with a few more details about the whole ordeal.... my favorite part is where Microsoft totally rubs it in Apple's face by saying, "In general, our policy is to allow others to license our patents so they can use our innovative methods in their products"..... LOL... this coming from the company that stole most of the ideas in their O/S from Apple.... The irony is so thick, you could cut it with a wet herring.
Well.... that was a nice way to start off a Sunday afternoon.... I'm glad I ran across that little tidbit....... aren't you?
